Why train self-defense

Skills you actually practice

Real self-defense starts before anything gets physical: noticing what is around you, setting a clear boundary, and talking a situation down or walking away. When that is not enough, it is breaking a grip, getting off the ground, and getting to safety. At Flow Academy BJJ Riverside, you practice all of it through Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, with a real partner, every week.

Getting back to your feet

If you end up on the ground, the goal is simple: protect yourself, make space, and stand back up. Jiu-jitsu drills exactly that, using your hips and legs instead of strength.

Awareness and boundaries

The first skill is noticing. Students learn to pay attention to their surroundings, trust their instincts, keep a safe distance, and set a clear boundary with their voice and posture.

Words first, always

Many situations can be talked down or walked away from. We teach calm, confident words and when the smartest move is simply to leave.

Escaping grabs and holds

Wrist grabs, bear hugs, headlocks, and pins: you learn simple, leverage-based escapes and practice them against controlled resistance.

Leverage over strength

Jiu-jitsu was built so a smaller person could handle a bigger one. Angles, timing, and leverage do the work, so size and strength matter less than good technique.

Confidence that shows

Knowing you have practiced these skills changes how you carry yourself, how you speak up, and how you handle conflict.

Calm under stress

Jiu-jitsu puts you in uncomfortable positions on purpose, in a safe room, so you learn to breathe, think, and solve the problem instead of freezing.

Fitness you will use

Drilling and live rounds build strength, cardio, mobility, and balance: practical fitness you can actually use.

A community that has your back

You train with the same people every week. Partners look out for each other, and the room is built on respect.

Discipline that carries over

Showing up and drilling a technique until it is right builds discipline that follows you to work, school, and home.

Resilience, one round at a time

Everyone gets stuck and has an off night. Then you reset and try again. That habit of getting back up is the heart of self-defense, on the mat and off it.

Habits for life

Skills fade without practice. Training a couple of times a week keeps them sharp, and jiu-jitsu is something you can do for decades.

Our promise, honestly. No class can guarantee your safety, and we will never pretend otherwise. What we can promise is practical skills, taught step by step and practiced with real partners, plus the awareness and confidence that help you stay out of trouble in the first place.

What a class looks like

Inside a self-defense class

Self-defense at Flow is taught through our jiu-jitsu classes, so you build real skill every week. Here is the general flow; coaches adjust it to the group.

  1. Warm-up

    Get moving

Mobility drills and jiu-jitsu basics like hip escapes and breakfalls (safe ways to fall).

  2. Technique

    Learn the why

A coach demonstrates a technique, such as breaking a grip, escaping from your back, or standing up safely, and explains why it works. Questions are welcome.

  3. Drilling

    Practice with a partner

Partners take turns with light, cooperative resistance while coaches fix details.

  4. Rounds

    Test it under pressure

Many classes finish with positional rounds (starting from a set position with a clear goal) or live rolling. You control your intensity, new students ease in, and a tap always means stop.

  5. Wrap-up

    Cool down and ask

Class ends with a cool-down and time for questions about anything you worked on.

Honest answers

What people ask us first

Signing up for self-defense raises real questions. Here are straight answers.

Will a few classes make me safe?

No class can promise that.

Awareness and a calm, firm voice help right away. Physical skills take repetition, which is why we teach self-defense through ongoing classes you can train every week.

I'm small, or not very strong.

Jiu-jitsu was built for you.

Techniques rely on leverage, angles, and timing. You practice with partners of different sizes, so you learn what works for your body.

I'm out of shape.

Start anyway.

Warm-ups and drills scale to you, and training is how the fitness comes.

Do I have to fight or spar?

You set the pace.

Techniques are learned cooperatively first. Live rounds come later, at an intensity you choose, and a tap always means stop.

Will it make my kid aggressive?

It teaches control.

Kids learn a simple order: words first, walk away, get help from an adult, and protect yourself only if you have to.

Which class should I take?

We'll help you choose.

Adults and teens 15+ usually start in Adult Gi Fundamentals on Monday nights. Kids train by age group, and women have two options below.

What's the best martial art for self-defense?

There is no single answer for everyone, but Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a strong choice. It teaches you to escape grabs and holds, get back to your feet, and control a bigger person with leverage instead of strength, and you practice it against a real, resisting partner. At Flow Academy, self-defense is taught through jiu-jitsu, with awareness and de-escalation first.

Can I learn self-defense with no experience?

Yes. Every program is beginner-friendly, and every technique is taught step by step. Adults and teens 15 and up usually start in Adult Gi Fundamentals on Mondays at 6:30 PM.

Do I need to be fit or strong to start?

No. Jiu-jitsu relies on leverage, angles, and timing more than strength. Warm-ups and drills scale to your level, and training is how the fitness comes.

What should I wear to my first class?

Comfortable workout clothes: a t-shirt or rash guard and athletic shorts or pants without zippers or pockets. We train barefoot on the mat, so bring sandals for walking off it, plus water. If you continue in Gi classes, you'll need a Flow Academy gi after your free first class.

Do you offer self-defense classes for kids?

Yes. Little Ninjas (ages 3–5), Kids Gi (ages 6–9), and Youth Gi (ages 10–14) meet on Monday and Wednesday afternoons, and Youth No-Gi meets Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Kids learn to use their words first, walk away, and get help from an adult, along with real skills to stay safe without striking.
