Martial Arts for Fitness and Weight Loss in Riverside: An Honest Guide

November 3, 2026

An instructor kneels beside an adult beginner on the mat, adjusting his grip during an Adults Jiu-Jitsu class.

Training at Flow Academy Riverside can be a strong way to get the regular exercise that weight loss depends on, but no class can promise a number on the scale. The CDC says getting to and staying at a healthy weight takes both regular physical activity and healthy eating patterns. Here is how martial arts fits into that, honestly.

What the Guidelines Say

The CDC’s physical activity guidelines say adults need 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity a week, or 75 minutes of vigorous activity, plus at least 2 days of muscle-strengthening activity. The CDC also says some physical activity is better than none, and that you can spread it out through the week in smaller chunks.

On weight specifically, the CDC says most weight loss comes from eating fewer calories, that you may need more than the recommended minutes of activity to keep your weight steady, and that regular physical activity is the only way to keep lost weight off. Training helps most when it’s paired with how you eat.

How Many Calories Does a Class Burn?

We don’t publish a calorie number, because there isn’t an honest single one. It depends on your size, how hard you work, how much of the class is drilling versus live rounds, and how long you rest between them. A fitness tracker can give you a rough estimate for your own body; treat it as a guide, not a fact.

Jiu-Jitsu, Boxing, Muay Thai and MMA for Fitness

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Grappling works your whole body at once: legs, hips, grip, core and lungs. Drilling is steady work, and live rounds are short bursts of hard effort. There are no punches or kicks, and you can take a breather whenever you need one.

Boxing

Punching combinations, footwork and defense make for intense cardio and strong shoulders and core, with gloves on.

Muay Thai

Thai boxing adds kicks, knees and elbows to punches, usually trained in hard rounds on pads.

MMA

Mixed martial arts blends striking and grappling, so classes move between both kinds of work.

The best martial art for fitness is the one you’ll keep showing up for. Flow Academy Riverside teaches jiu-jitsu; Muay Thai and adult MMA are taught at Flow Academy Indio.

If High Intensity Isn’t for You

Active Fit 55+ is a low-impact fitness class for adults 55 and older, with strength, balance, mobility and steady cardio. It is not a martial arts class. It meets 2 days a week, Tuesday and Thursday at 9:00 AM, for $150 a month. For people living with Parkinson’s, Rise & Strike Boxing is non-contact, boxing-based exercise on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 9:30 AM and 10:30 AM; it’s exercise, not a medical treatment.

Start Safely

You don’t need to get in shape before your first class; training is how the fitness comes. Talk to your doctor before starting a new exercise program, especially if you have a health condition. Tell your coach about old injuries, bring water, and go at your own pace. We coach, we don’t give medical or diet advice.
