A Mother and Daughter Can Share a Tuesday Night on the Mat

November 6, 2026

Yes. A mother and her daughter can train jiu-jitsu side by side at Flow Academy BJJ Riverside. Our Women’s Jiu-Jitsu class is women only, open to women and girls ages 10 and up, and meets Tuesdays at 6:00 PM. It is taught by Professor Zaide Oropeza, a black belt who leads our women’s program. The full schedule shows the rest of the week.

It’s a question Riverside families ask as the holidays get close and the calendar fills up: “If I sign up, can my daughter come too?” She can, and a lot of moms end up glad they asked.

Two People, One Mat, Same Class

Nobody gets sent to a separate corner. A 12-year-old and her mom warm up together, learn the same technique and then drill it with partners. Sometimes that partner is each other. Sometimes it’s another woman in the room, which is good for both of them. Professor Zaide teaches the whole room, so a beginner of any age gets the same attention.

Why Jiu-Jitsu Works for a Parent and a Kid

Jiu-jitsu is built on leverage and timing, not on who is bigger. That’s why a mother and a middle-schooler can work through the same position and both learn something. There are no strikes in this class, and everyone trains at a pace that fits their own body.

It also shuffles who knows more. Mom might be the nervous one in week one, and her daughter might be the one showing her where to put her feet. A few weeks later it can flip. Parents like watching their kid be patient with a beginner, and kids like seeing their mom be a beginner.

What Mom Gets Out of It

A real hour of her own, a room full of women who started where she is, and a reason to leave the house on a Tuesday evening that has nothing to do with errands. The women’s room is a place where grown women are allowed to be new at something.

What to Expect

You train barefoot on the mat. Wear comfortable workout clothes the first time. Your first class is free, and you don’t need a gi to start. Women’s Jiu-Jitsu is $100 a month.

It’s a different class from our Saturday Women’s Self-Defense course, a separate program that is coming soon.
