Is Jiu-Jitsu Good for Women? Why Leverage Beats Size

October 30, 2026

Yes, and the reason is simple. At Flow Academy BJJ Riverside, our Women’s Jiu-Jitsu class is for women and girls ages 10 and up, it is women only, and it meets Tuesdays at 6:00 PM once our new Riverside home at 10081 Indiana Ave, Suite A-1 opens in mid-November 2026. It is taught by Professor Zaide Oropesa, a black belt who leads our women’s program.

We think jiu-jitsu is the best martial art for most women to start with. That is our view, and here are the reasons we hold it.

Leverage Is the Whole Idea

Jiu-jitsu was built around technique, timing and leverage rather than size and strength. A good hip escape works because of where your hips go, not how hard you push. That is why a smaller person can learn to control and get out from under a bigger one, and why the class starts slowly, one small piece at a time.

You Test It on a Partner Who Pushes Back

Most of what you learn gets tried against a real, resisting partner, at full effort, with no striking. So a technique is something you have felt work, not something you only watched. Partners are matched by size and experience, and a tap means stop, every time.

It Works From the Ground

A lot of martial arts spend their time on feet and fists. Jiu-jitsu spends it on the ground, where many real situations end up. You learn to stay calm, make space and get back to your feet. It is practical skill, taught without fear and without hype.

A Room Where Beginners Ask Questions

Plenty of women would rather not start in a room full of strangers who all know what they are doing. This class is all women and girls, and every question is welcome. A mother and her 10-year-old daughter can train side by side, which is a different kind of evening together.

Why Professor Zaide Matters

Professor Zaide Oropesa is a black belt, and she leads the women’s program at Flow Academy. She teaches the Tuesday class herself. For a new student, that means the person showing you the technique has done the long road she is asking you to start.

Fitness Without a Gym Routine

Drilling with a partner builds strength, flexibility and conditioning, and you are busy enough learning that it rarely feels like a workout. The confidence that builds as you improve is meant to carry into work, school and home.

What Your First Class Looks Like

Wear comfortable workout clothes. You train barefoot on the mat, and you do not need a gi for your first class. Your first class is free, and our Women’s Jiu-Jitsu page and full schedule have the details. Women’s Self-Defense is a separate Saturday course, listed on its own page. If you would rather not wait for Riverside, our Indio academy is training now.

Questions

Do I need to be strong or in shape to start Women’s Jiu-Jitsu in Riverside?

No. Warm-ups and drills meet you where you are, and you go at your own pace. Training is how you get in shape.

Can my 10-year-old daughter train in the Women’s Jiu-Jitsu class?

Yes. Girls ages 10 and up are welcome, and Professor Zaide pairs partners by size and experience so your daughter trains with someone who fits.

Will men be in the Women’s Jiu-Jitsu class at Flow Academy BJJ Riverside?

No. It is a women-only class, so every partner you train with is a woman or a girl.
