Gi on Tuesday or No-Gi on Thursday? How Homeschool Families Choose

November 3, 2026

Start with whichever one sounds more fun to your child. At Flow Academy BJJ Riverside, our homeschool morning classes are Home School Gi on Tuesdays and Home School No-Gi on Thursdays, both at 11:00 AM, at 10081 Indiana Ave, Suite A-1 once our new home opens in mid-November 2026. Both are part of our kids jiu-jitsu program, and they’re built around a homeschool day.

The mornings have finally cooled off, and families planning their winter school schedule keep asking us the same thing: Tuesday or Thursday? Here’s how we’d think it through.

What Changes Between Gi and No-Gi

In Gi class, kids wear the jacket, pants and belt. The fabric gives both partners something to grab, so the class leans toward patience, grips and getting the details right. Belts are worn with the gi.

No-Gi drops the jacket. Kids train in fitted athletic clothes, and with nothing to grab, the pace is quicker and the work looks more like wrestling. It rewards speed and body awareness. Our No-Gi page goes deeper.

Three Questions That Usually Settle It

  • Does your child like steady steps and a clear routine, or would they rather move fast? The first points to Tuesday, the second to Thursday.
  • Is earning a belt something your child would care about?
  • Are you ready to buy a gi? It isn’t included in the membership price, so ask us for current pricing and sizing.

Do We Have to Pick Just One?

No. Our coaches’ advice is to start with the day that sounds more fun and add the other when your child is ready. Ask us how to set up both days, and ask your Education Specialist how your charter handles a second class. We don’t guess at school policy.

Charter Funds and the Paperwork

Flow Academy BJJ Riverside is an approved enrichment vendor with Mission Vista Academy, Excel Academy and Elite Academic Academy. Other charters can request vendor approval. What your funds cover is something your Education Specialist confirms. Our charter school page shows how the process looks from our side.

Comfortable athletic clothes and a water bottle. The first class is free, and kids train barefoot on the mat. A gi comes after that, if you choose Gi class.
