The Question We Keep Getting at the Front Desk This Summer

July 6, 2026

A group of women in a supportive semicircle on the mat as a coach demonstrates a self-defense stance.

We've had the same conversation at the front desk a handful of times this month. A woman walks in during open gym, watches for a minute, and asks some version of the same thing: "Do you have anything for someone like me who's never done this before?" The answer, more and more this summer, is our Women's Self-Defense course.

It's a six-week program, and it's built specifically for beginners. You don't need a uniform for your first visit, just comfortable athletic clothes and bare feet on the mat. You don't need any prior experience either. Most of the women who walk through our doors for this course have never grappled, never thrown a punch, never set foot on a mat in their life. That's exactly who it's for.

Coach Zaide leads the course, and she also runs our Active Fit 55+ class, so she's used to building confidence in people who are starting from zero. Her approach is patient and direct: real technique, explained clearly, practiced in a room where nobody is showing off and nobody is being judged.

Why summer is a good time to start

July has a way of opening people's schedules up, at least for a few weeks before the fall calendar fills back in with school pickups and everyone else's commitments. If you've been meaning to do something just for yourself, this is a natural window. Six weeks fits neatly into a summer, and you'll be done well before things get busy again in September.

What the six weeks actually cover

The course focuses on practical, standing self-defense, things like creating space, protecting yourself in close situations, and using leverage instead of strength. Coach Zaide breaks each class into small, repeatable pieces so you leave having actually practiced the movement, not just watched someone else do it. There's no pressure to be athletic or in shape first. You show up as you are, and the class meets you there.

What it feels like in the room

Here's what surprises most women after their first class: nobody is staring, nobody is keeping score. The room fills with other women working through the same material at their own pace, and there's a kind of quiet camaraderie that builds over six weeks. People show up nervous in week one and leave week six standing a little taller, not because anything dramatic happened, but because they practiced something real, over and over, in a room that had their back.

We think that's the whole point. Self-defense isn't about fear, it's about walking around with a little more calm, a little more certainty in your own body. That's what six weeks on our mats can give you.

How to enroll

The course is enrolling now, and your first class is always free, so there's no reason to decide anything before you've actually stepped on the mat. If you'd like to see the room, meet Coach Zaide, and find out when the next six-week group starts, give us a call or text at (951) 337-3781. You can also read more about the Women's Self-Defense program on our site. And if you're active-duty, a veteran, in law enforcement, or a current college student, ask about our 10% discount when you call.

We'd love to see you on the mat this summer.
