Your Kid’s Class Is at 5:30. Yours Could Be at 6:30.
October 12, 2026
One question has kept showing up in our texts this October, usually from a parent: “My kid’s class is at 5:30. Is there something I could do while I wait?” There is, and it might be a class of your own.
Our Riverside academy is closed for remodel until Sunday, November 1, 2026, so there are no Riverside classes before then. Our new home opens that day at 10081 Indiana Ave, Suite A-2. If you’re going to be a jiu-jitsu family, this is a good month to think about how the evening could work.
The Evening on Paper
Before the remodel, Youth BJJ for ages 10–14 met Monday and Wednesday at 5:30 PM, and Adult BJJ met on the same nights at 6:30 PM. Kids BJJ for ages 7–9 started at 4:30, and Little Ninjas for ages 3–6 ran at 3:45 and 4:30. A parent with a kid in the afternoon class and a free evening has a class waiting. We haven’t confirmed days and times at the new space, so call or text before you plan around any of these.
You Don’t Have to Be in Shape First
This is the objection we hear most from parents. They’ve been sitting in a folding chair for a year, and now they’re picturing themselves on a mat. Nobody is grading your cardio. A first class for an adult is mostly learning how to move, how to fall, and how to tell your partner you’ve had enough. If you’re worried about getting hurt, we wrote down what we tell every new adult.
Kids Notice Who’s Bad at Something
A child who trains while a parent watches from the sideline learns that jiu-jitsu is something kids do. A child whose parent trains learns that it’s something people do. Kids see an adult get tapped, laugh, and ask to go again. In our experience that does more for a nervous kid than any pep talk. We’ve said it before: tapping isn’t losing, and it’s easier to believe when you’ve done it yourself.
Separate Classes, One Evening
You won’t train with your child. Kids and adults have their own classes, so you’ll be with people your own age and your own level of beginner. The car ride home is where the two classes meet. Who got tapped, whose belt got retied, who forgot their mouthguard.
The Practical Part
Adult BJJ is $185, $200 or $225 a month, for a 12-month, 6-month or month-to-month plan. The gi isn’t included. Military, veterans, college students and law enforcement get 10% off. Once we reopen, your first class is free, so you can find out whether the 6:30 slot suits you before you commit to anything. If you can’t wait until November, our Indio academy’s classes are running normally.
Our new Riverside home opens November 1, 2026 at 10081 Indiana Ave, Suite A-2. Call or text (951) 337-3781.
