Fitness Comes From the Mat, Not Before It

September 7, 2026

An instructor kneels beside an adult beginner on the mat, adjusting his grip during an Adults Jiu-Jitsu class.

“Get in shape first, then start Jiu-Jitsu.” That’s the plan a lot of our new adult students had before they ever called us. It sounds responsible. It’s also backwards, and it’s probably cost us more first classes than any other single reason people give for waiting.

Here’s the part nobody tells you at the gym: conditioning isn’t something you bring to the mat. It’s something the mat builds into you, one round at a time, whether you’re ready for it or not.

The myth we hear most

September is when we hear it loudest. School’s back, the summer “I’ll start when things calm down” excuse has expired, and the calls start picking up — except a chunk of them ask the same question first: “How out of shape can I be and still show up?”

The honest answer is: however out of shape you are right now. We’ve had new white belts who hadn’t done a pushup in a decade. We’ve had them tap out during a warm-up before they ever touched a partner. None of that disqualifies anyone from Monday’s 6:30 PM Adults BJJ class — it’s exactly who that class is built around.

What actually gets you fit

Jiu-Jitsu doesn’t ask you to arrive fit. It asks you to arrive, period. The conditioning comes from drilling the same movement forty times a class, from three five-minute rounds you didn’t think you’d survive, from showing up twice a week for a month before you notice you’re not gassed by round two anymore.

Our coaches like to say the mat doesn’t care what you looked like in July. It only cares whether you’re on it in September. Every beginner we’ve ever watched improve did it in this order: show up unfit, get slightly less unfit, keep showing up. Nobody skips to the end.

Why now is the right time

It’s Labor Day as we write this, which is right about when we start seeing two kinds of adults walk through our doors: people whose kids just went back to school and suddenly have a free hour again, and people who spent all summer telling themselves “once it cools down.” Both groups are carrying the same fitness excuse, and both are about to find out it wasn’t true.

A few honest things happen your first few weeks on our mats:

  • Your legs will be sore from positions you didn’t know you had.
  • You’ll tap more than you’d like, and that’s normal, not a sign you don’t belong.
  • You’ll leave tired in a way a treadmill never quite manages.

That’s the process working, not a warning sign.

Come as you are

Adults BJJ runs Monday and Wednesday at 6:30 PM at our Riverside academy, and your first class is free. You don’t need a gi, you don’t need a training log, and you definitely don’t need six weeks on a treadmill first. Prof. Carlos Miller and our coaches have watched this exact story play out with hundreds of beginners — the ones who waited to get in shape, and the ones who just showed up and let the mat do what it does.

Call or text us at (951) 337-3781, or email connect@flowacademyhq.com, and we’ll walk you through what to expect before you ever step on the mat.
