Why 10 A.M. Has Become Our Favorite Time of Day on the Mats
July 21, 2026
By 9:45 on a Tuesday morning, the parking lot outside our Riverside academy is already shimmering, and stepping inside feels like the smartest decision anyone's made all day. The lights are soft, the air is cool, and a dozen or so adults in their fifties, sixties, and beyond are catching up about grandkids and weekend plans while they roll their shoulders and stretch out their calves. This is Active Fit 55+, and for about ten minutes it might be the calmest room in the building — right up until Coach Zaide claps twice and everyone gets moving.
Here's the myth this class keeps breaking: people hear "martial arts academy" and picture sparring mats, gis, kids chasing each other around cones. Active Fit 55+ is none of that. There's no rolling, no contact, nobody trying to submit anybody. What's actually happening is forty-five minutes of strength, mobility, and balance work built specifically for adults who want to move well and keep moving well, in a room full of people who show up for each other as much as the workout.
What a Tuesday actually looks like
Class opens with an easy warm-up — ankles, hips, shoulders, the joints that stiffen up if you sit at a desk or in a car all week. From there Coach Zaide leads the group through:
- Bodyweight strength work using the wall, a chair, or just their own two feet
- Balance and coordination drills that build confidence on uneven ground, not just flat gym floors
- Mobility flows for hips and shoulders that make everyday things — reaching, bending, getting up off the floor — feel easier
- A cooldown stretch with enough breathing room to actually talk to the person next to you
Nobody's chasing a personal record. The pace is set by the room, and the room sets a good one.
Why 10 A.M. in late July is the smart move
It's the last week of July, and by noon the pavement outside our Riverside academy is doing that shimmer thing California heat does. A 10 A.M. class means training happens before the day gets hot, in a room with the AC already running, and it's over in time for lunch. For anyone who used to walk outside for exercise and has quietly given that up for the summer, this is the indoor version that doesn't ask you to trade movement for comfort.
It's also, frankly, become one of our more social hours on the schedule. Tuesday and Thursday regulars know each other's names, ask about each other's trips, and stick around a few minutes after class more often than not. A handful came in after hearing about it from a friend who already trains here — that's most of how this class grows.
As with starting anything new, it's worth a quick conversation with your own doctor first, just so you walk in ready to get the most out of it.
Active Fit 55+ meets Tuesday and Thursday at 10 A.M., and it runs $150 a month for the two-day schedule, or $185 a month for three days a week. The first class is always free, no gear required beyond comfortable clothes and socks — classes train in socks on the mats. Our Riverside academy is in the middle of a move right now, so call or text (951) 337-3781 and we'll send over current directions and get you on the schedule.
August is coming whether the heat breaks or not. Ten o'clock on a Tuesday is a pretty good place to spend it.
