The PE Hour Homeschool Kids Actually Look Forward To

A mom stopped by our front desk last week with a question we hear more every summer: "Does this count as PE?" She homeschools her two boys through Excel Academy, and with fall planning already on her mind, she wanted the physical-education piece locked in before she built the rest of the year's schedule around it.

Short answer: yes, for families enrolled with one of our approved-vendor charters, jiu-jitsu satisfies that PE requirement the same way any structured physical activity would. We're an approved enrichment vendor with Mission Vista Academy, Excel Academy, and Elite Academic Academy, so if your student is with one of those three, that part of the paperwork is already built. If you're with a different charter, we can usually request vendor approval on our end — but the exact reimbursement rules always come down to what your family's own Education Specialist has on file, so that's the first call worth making before fall planning goes any further.

What PE looks like when it's not a worksheet

For a homeschooler, "PE" can turn into whatever's easiest to check off a list. On our mats it's forty-five minutes of a kid working stance, movement, and live positional rounds with a coach adjusting them rep by rep — nothing that gets phoned in. Little Ninjas (ages 3–6) meets Monday and Wednesday at 3:45 and 4:30, Kids Jiu-Jitsu (7–9) trains Monday and Wednesday at 4:30, Youth BJJ (10–14) is Monday and Wednesday at 5:30, and for homeschoolers who want something a little rougher, Youth NoGi and Wrestling meets Tuesday and Thursday at 6. All of it lands in the after-school window, so it doesn't have to compete with the morning hours most homeschool families already have built around math and reading.

The part that surprises parents more than the PE credit does

Here's what usually lands harder than the paperwork answer: the socialization. A homeschool kid's week can run adult-heavy — parents, siblings, maybe a co-op meetup once or twice a month. Step onto our mat and it's a room full of other kids the same age, working the same drill, cheering each other on, occasionally getting stacked on their head and laughing about it afterward. Coach Zaide and Coach Benjamin Frietze run a lot of that daily traffic on the kids' mats, and Professor Carlos Miller, twenty-nine years into teaching this, still gets down there with the younger belts himself.

Belts give a homeschool family something a worksheet never will, too — a visible, physical record of progress. Stripes get taped on in front of the class. A promotion means a new belt gets tied on with everyone watching. There's no guessing whether the year's PE hours added up to anything; you can watch it show up around your kid's waist.
