Nobody Gets a Stripe for Waiting

October 19, 2026

Here’s a text we get more often than you’d think: “My son came home with a new piece of tape on his belt. What did he do?” Short answer: something good. The longer answer is this post, because plenty of Riverside parents are planning ahead while we move and want to understand the belt before class starts again.

What That Tape Actually Is

Every belt at Flow has a short black ranking bar near one end. That’s standard on real jiu-jitsu belts, and it’s where progress gets marked. A stripe is a small, thin piece of tape wrapped across that bar. One at a time, never all at once.

Adults can collect up to four on each belt. Kids work differently. Our youth combination belts, the two-colour ones, carry up to four stripes. The solid-colour youth belts carry up to eleven. The kids’ ladder runs from white up through grey, yellow, orange and green, with combination belts between the steps. That’s a lot of small marks, and a lot of chances for a child to see that they’re moving.

Why There’s No Calendar

Two kids can start the same week and get their first stripe months apart. Nobody made a mistake. Stripes aren’t scheduled, and nobody earns one by waiting.

Our coaches, Professor Carlos Miller, Professor Zaide and the rest of the jiu-jitsu team, decide based on what they see on the mat. Showing up counts. So does effort, and so does how a child treats the training partner in front of them. A kid who listens, tries the hard drill and helps a smaller classmate is showing us something no attendance sheet can.

That’s also why we won’t promise a date for a stripe, or for a belt. If you’re curious about the bigger picture, we wrote about it in the belt timeline we won’t give you. Stripes are the small steps inside that long road.

Talking About It at Home

The easiest mistake is turning the stripe into the question. “When do you get your next one?” puts a kid in a waiting room. Try “What did you work on tonight?” and let them tell you what was hard.

If a friend got a stripe and your child didn’t, you can say, “The coaches watch different things for each kid. Yours will come.” It keeps the comparison out of the car ride home.

And please don’t promise one, or use it as a reward for homework. You can’t know when it’s coming; only the coaches do. When a stripe does show up, celebrate the effort behind it. The tape is only the receipt.

Where We Are Right Now

There are no Riverside classes at the moment, so nobody is earning a stripe here this week. If you’d rather not wait, our Indio academy is running classes as usual. Questions about the belt system are always welcome by phone or text.
