Is October Too Late to Start?

By the time October rolls around, we hear some version of the same worry from charter and homeschool parents at our Riverside academy: they meant to sign their kid up back in August, summer got busy, and now they’re calling to ask if they missed the window. They didn’t. There isn’t a window to miss — new students start on our mats every single week, all year, and October is exactly as good a month to begin as any other. If anything, it’s a calmer one; the back-to-school rush has settled, and routines finally have some breathing room in them.

There’s No Class You’re Behind

Traditional school runs on a semester, so it’s natural to assume martial arts works the same way — sign up before the bell, or wait for the next term. Jiu-Jitsu doesn’t work like that. Every student, from a four-year-old in Little Ninjas to a fourteen-year-old in Youth BJJ, is working toward their own next belt requirement, not a shared lesson plan the rest of the class already covered. On any given mat, the kid next to your child might have started in January, or might have started last Wednesday — you genuinely can’t tell by watching. Professor Carlos Miller and Professor Zaide approve progress kid by kid, skill by skill, so a student who steps onto the mat for the first time in October isn’t catching up to anyone. They’re just starting, the same as every white belt before them.

What Starting in October Actually Looks Like

Our fall schedule is already running, and there’s room in it. Little Ninjas (ages 3–6) meets Monday and Wednesday afternoons. Kids Jiu-Jitsu (7–9) trains Monday and Wednesday at 4:30 PM, and Youth BJJ (10–14) follows at 5:30 PM. If your student also wants no-gi and wrestling, that class runs Tuesday and Thursday at 6 PM. Your child’s first class is always free, so instead of waiting for some imagined “next enrollment period,” the simplest move is to come watch one class this week and let them try it on the mat before anyone signs anything.

For Our Charter and Homeschool Families

Flow Academy is an approved enrichment vendor with Mission Vista Academy, Excel Academy, and Elite Academic Academy, and families at other charters can request vendor approval on our end. What an October start means for this year’s funds — timing, deadlines, remaining budget — is a question only your Education Specialist can answer, so that’s the first call to make if funding is part of the plan. We’re glad to send over whatever paperwork they need on our side, and we’ll never guess at school policy on your behalf; that answer always comes from your ES, not from us.

Fall Is a Fine Time to Begin

There’s a version of this worry that shows up every season, not just October — parents assume they’ve missed some cutoff that, on a real jiu-jitsu mat, doesn’t exist. No cohort graduates together. No one gets left behind because they joined in month two instead of month one. The only thing that actually matters is showing up, and the sooner that starts, the sooner your student has a belt requirement of their own to work toward.
