The Fall Schedule Question Charter Families Are Already Asking Us

A homeschool mom stopped by the front desk on Tuesday with a question we've been hearing more of lately: "If we want a spot in the fall, when do we actually need to lock it in?" It's the middle of July, which feels early to be thinking about September. But if you've registered for classes before, you already know the good time slots don't wait for back-to-school season to officially start.

Here's the honest answer: now. Not because we're trying to rush anyone, but because fall fills differently than summer does. Once the school-year rhythm kicks back in, our Monday/Wednesday and Tuesday/Thursday kids' slots tend to fill up fast, and families who wait until the last week of August usually end up choosing between whatever's left on the schedule instead of the time that actually works for their week.

For charter and homeschool families, there's a second piece to plan around too. A lot of parents treat class registration and Education Specialist paperwork as two separate errands to get to "whenever." For funds-eligible families, they're really one errand, and the paperwork side is the one that takes longer. Flow Academy BJJ Riverside is an approved enrichment vendor with Mission Vista Academy, Excel Academy, and Elite Academic Academy, and yes, enrichment funds can typically go toward tuition here — we walked through exactly how that works in an earlier post, so we won't repeat all of it today. What we want to talk about is timing.

Why July, not August

Most Education Specialists start getting busy the moment fall paperwork opens, and vendor approvals or funds requests can take a few weeks to process depending on your charter. Start that conversation with your ES in mid-July and there's breathing room. Start it the week before school starts, and you're often waiting on a signature while the class you wanted fills up around you.

What planning ahead actually looks like

It doesn't need to be complicated. Getting ready for fall really comes down to a few things: pick the class time that fits your family's real week, not just the ideal one on paper; reach out to your Education Specialist now to start any funds paperwork so it's done before the fall rush; and call or text us so we can talk through which program fits your child before the schedule tightens up.

We work with charter and homeschool families across a range of ages, from Little Ninjas at 3 to 6 on Monday and Wednesday afternoons, up through Youth BJJ for 10 to 14 year olds in the evening. Coach Zaide and Coach Benjamin Frietze are both around most weeks if you want to meet the people your kid will actually be training with before you commit to anything.
