The Charter Question We Can’t Just Say Yes To

A dad stood at our front desk last Thursday holding his phone with his charter portal pulled up, scrolling for our name on the approved-vendor list. He didn’t find it. His question was simple: “Does that mean we’re out of luck?” It doesn’t — it just means the paperwork hasn’t been started yet, and that part is on us as much as it’s on him.

Right now we’re an approved enrichment vendor with three charters in the area — Mission Vista Academy, Excel Academy, and Elite Academic Academy. Families enrolled at any of those three can already put their charter funds toward Flow. If your family’s charter isn’t on that short list, you’re not stuck outside looking in. You’re just one step earlier in a process a lot of our current families have already been through.

How a vendor request actually starts

It doesn’t start with us. It starts with you telling your child’s Education Specialist that you’d like Flow added as an approved vendor. That one conversation is the trigger for everything after it — the charter then sends us their vendor paperwork and agreement, and we fill it out and send it back. We’ve done this before, so our side of it moves quickly. What we can’t control is the charter’s own review process, and that part is genuinely different from school to school. Some move in a couple of weeks. Others take longer. We won’t promise you a date, because we’d be guessing, and a guess isn’t worth much when you’re trying to plan a fall schedule.

What we can tell you is that the request has never once started at our desk. It starts at yours, with your Education Specialist, and every family who’s made it onto our vendor list got there the same way.

Why the first week of August is the week to ask

We’re watching two things fill up right now, and neither one waits for paperwork. Charter enrichment funds for the fall term have a window, and most charters aren’t generous about opening it back up once it closes. And our own class spots — Little Ninjas at 3:45 and 4:30, Kids Jiu-Jitsu at 4:30, Youth BJJ at 5:30, all Monday and Wednesday — are the same spots every other homeschool and charter family in Riverside is also trying to grab before September. Starting the vendor request this week doesn’t guarantee an answer by a certain date. It just means you’re not the family asking in the last week of August, when both the funds and the mat time are already spoken for.

We can’t tell you exactly how your charter’s funds can be used until you’ve confirmed the specifics with your Education Specialist — every charter writes its own rules there, and we’d rather send you to the person who actually knows yours than guess. What we can do is get our end of the paperwork moving the same day you call, and get your kid on the mat for a free first class while the request works its way through your charter’s office.
