Can Charter Funds Pay for Martial Arts? How It Works for Riverside Homeschool Families

A homeschool mom asked us this at the front desk last week: "My charter gives us enrichment money every year. Can I actually use it for jiu-jitsu?" For a lot of Riverside families, the answer is yes, and most of them just never realized martial arts counted.

Here's the short version. Several charter and homeschool programs set aside enrichment or instructional funds each year, and those funds can often go toward approved outside classes. Flow Academy is already an approved enrichment vendor with Mission Vista Academy, Excel Academy, and Elite Academic Academy. If your family is enrolled with one of those, there's a good chance your student can train with us using funds you already have.

What "approved vendor" actually means for you

Being an approved vendor means the paperwork side is already handled on our end. Your Education Specialist can send purchase orders our way, and we know how to work with them. We're also CSA charter-approved, and if your charter isn't on the list above, that doesn't mean you're out of luck. Other schools can request vendor approval from us, and we're happy to start that conversation.

One honest caveat: every charter writes its own rules about what enrichment funds cover and how much. We can't tell you your school's specific policy or dollar amounts. The right move is to ask your own Education Specialist what your family's funds can be used for, then let us handle the vendor side once you know.

Timing this for the fall

It's early July, which is honestly the sweet spot. Fall enrichment plans get locked in over the summer, and popular class times fill up once September hits and everyone's scrambling. If you sort this out now, your student walks into fall already enrolled instead of on a waitlist. A quick call to your ES this month can save you a headache later.

Which class fits your homeschooler

We group kids by age so every student trains with peers who move and learn the way they do. Depending on your child's age, that could be:

• Little Ninjas, ages 3 to 6, Monday and Wednesday at 3:45 and 4:30 PM
• Kids Jiu-Jitsu, ages 7 to 9, Monday and Wednesday at 4:30 PM
• Youth BJJ, ages 10 to 14, Monday and Wednesday at 5:30 PM
• Youth No-Gi and Wrestling, ages 6 and up, Tuesday and Thursday at 6:00 PM

Since your family homeschools, your days are more open than most. If those afternoon times don't line up with your rhythm, call and ask about daytime and scheduling flexibility. We'd rather find a slot that works than have you force it.

Whatever your student joins, they're learning from a real staff. Professor Carlos Miller has been teaching for more than 29 years and holds a fourth-degree black belt, and Coach Zaide and Coach Benjamin Frietze round out the mat. For your kid, it's fun, focus, and the quiet confidence that comes from getting a little better each week.
