Boxing for Parkinson's: What Rise and Strike Is All About
June 23, 2026
When people hear the word boxing, they picture sparring and contact. Rise and Strike Boxing at Flow Academy Riverside is something different, and something hopeful. It is a non-contact, boxing-based exercise program created for people living with Parkinson's disease. There is no fighting and no getting hit. There is movement, encouragement, and a community that shows up for one another every week.
Our classes are led by coaches trained to work with people living with Parkinson's. The goal here is not performance. It is a welcoming, structured class where each participant moves, works the bag, and takes part at their own pace, alongside a community that shows up for one another every week.
What a class looks like
A typical class mixes work on the heavy bag, footwork, and large, deliberate movements, with plenty of encouragement along the way. Every participant works at their own level, and coaches adjust the exercises so the class meets each person where they are. Many tell us that what they value most is the chance to stay active and be part of a group that understands what they are going through.
Community and encouragement
One of the most powerful parts of Rise and Strike is the people in the room. Participants encourage each other, coaches know everyone by name, and the atmosphere is warm, patient, and genuinely uplifting. Facing Parkinson's can feel isolating, and this class turns exercise into a shared experience where nobody is alone. Showing up becomes something to look forward to, not just something to check off.
Families notice the change too. Loved ones often tell us that the class gives their person something to prepare for, something to talk about, and a group of friends who understand exactly what they are going through. Caregivers are welcome to come along, and many find the community just as meaningful for themselves. The encouragement in the room does not stay in the room. It tends to follow people home and carry through the rest of their week.
