BJJ for Beginners: What to Expect at Your First Class
May 26, 2026
Starting Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as an adult can feel intimidating from the outside. Most people picture a room full of seasoned grapplers and worry they will be the only beginner who has no idea what they are doing. The reality at Flow Academy Riverside is a lot friendlier than that. Adults start here all the time, at every age and fitness level, and our program is built to welcome you in rather than throw you to the wolves.
Your first class is about learning the environment more than mastering technique. From the moment you walk in, a coach greets you, shows you where to go, and makes sure you know what to expect. You are never left standing on the side wondering what to do. That welcome sets the tone for everything that follows.
The warm-up and the basics
Class usually opens with a warm-up that doubles as movement practice, so you start getting comfortable on the mat right away. From there, a coach walks the group through a few fundamental positions and movements, then you drill them with a partner at your own pace. Nobody expects you to look smooth on day one, and you should not either. The coaches keep new students close, correct the things that matter, and let the small stuff wait until you are ready. You will practice with a partner, but the early focus is control and safety, not intensity.
Gi and No-Gi, and what to wear
Adults BJJ at Riverside runs on Monday and Wednesday at 6:30 PM, and we train both Gi and No-Gi. The Gi is the traditional uniform, and No-Gi is trained in athletic wear. As a beginner you do not need to own a Gi to start, and uniforms are not included with membership, so for your first class simply wear comfortable athletic clothing. There are no shoes on the mat, so clean bare feet are the norm. Come hydrated, come curious, and give yourself permission to be new at something.
Why structure matters for a beginner
The thing that keeps adults training is not intensity, it is progress they can actually see. Our curriculum moves in a clear order, from staying safe and escaping bad positions toward building a dependable personal game over time. Because there is a real structure to follow, you always know what you are working toward, and that clarity is what turns a nervous first class into a training habit that lasts for years.
It also helps to know who you are learning from. Our head instructor is Professor Carlos Miller, a fourth-degree black belt with twenty-nine years on the mats, whose lineage traces from Rickson Gracie through Aloisio Silva. That depth of experience means the fundamentals you learn on day one are the same fundamentals that hold up years down the road.
Your first class is free, so there is no risk in finding out whether adult BJJ is for you. Book an adult trial and we will take care of the rest.
